Author Guidelines

Finnish Journal of Social Research accepts online submissions only. Please submit manuscripts in Microsoft Word format.

All published articles are double-blind peer-reviewed by at least two experts. Please remove any identifying information from the manuscript, such as the authors' names, contact details, and affiliations. This information will be submitted in a separate document (see below). Please include a statement confirming that all authors have agreed to the submission and that the article has not been published nor is currently considered for publication by any other print or electronic journal.

Submitting authors should note that the journal adheres to the principles of the peer-reviewing process as set out by the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies (TSV). This includes the requirement to document the main aspects of the peer review process. These data are not made public but they may be provided to TSV or the Advisory Board on Research Integrity (TENK) if requested.

Manuscript format

Each manuscript should contain:

  1. A title page with the full title and subtitle (if any).
  2. The full name of each author with her/his current affiliation, email details, and short biographical note, in a separate document.
  3. A concise abstract summarizing the research questions, background, data and methods, and the results and contributions of the study. The abstract should be no more than 150 words.
  4. Up to six (6) keywords.
  5. Main text and word count, not exceeding 8000 words (including references and end notes). The text must be clearly organized, with a logical hierarchy of headings and subheadings. Use font size 12 (Times New Roman or Arial) and page numbers throughout the manuscriupt.
  6. Initial submissions to the journal can be format-free, which enables authors to submit their manuscripts without being bound by a specific citation style (such as Harvard, Vancouver, or APA). Nonetheless, initial submissions must adhere to a consistent style of referencing. Once the manuscript is accepted for publication, authors must format their manuscript according to the American Psychological Association (APA) style. Detailed APA guidelines can be found on the APA Style website.

Tables and figures

On initial submission, tables and figures can be either included in the manuscript or submitted on separate sheets (with a note indicating their position in the manuscript). All tables and figures should have short descriptive captions and their source(s) typed below the tables.

Additionally

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission from copyright holders for reproducing through any medium of communication any illustrations, tables, figures or lengthy quotations previously published elsewhere.

Authors are expected to follow standard academic ethical guidelines. In case plagiarism is suspected, the manuscript may be screened for plagiarism using Turnitin (http://www.turnitin.com). Plagiarized manuscripts will be rejected and reported to the authors’ employing institutions.

UK or US spelling may be used. The final approved version of the manuscript has to be language checked.
